Abstract
The goal of this study was to develop environmental sound recognition test for hearing impaired infants or preschool children. The general environmental sounds used in this study were selected mostly from the CD which was used by a broadcasting station. The speech environmental sounds were selected from the MCDI-K and questionnarie for speech language therapists. The actual test materials were consisted of 15 plates of general environmental sounds and 15 plates of speech environmental sounds. Each plate was consisted of 4 pictures with 12 colors. The pictures of each plate were classified with respect to the frequency range£ºlow, mid-low, mid-high and high. The developed test was called Hallym University-environmental sound recognition test by pictures (HU-ESRP). The test was performed to 15 children with normal hearing and 15 hearing impaired children. The results showed that all subjects understood most of environmental sounds and there was no significant difference in recognition scores between general and speech environmental sound tests. Generally, in addition, recognition scores of normal hearing children were slightly higher than those of hearing impaired children. Therefore, the HU-ESRP can be utilized as a valuable clinical and rehabilitative training tool for hearing-impaired infants and preschool children. More data should be obtained and analyzed, however, to standardized this instrument.
